Since the article helping my fellow diesel VRS owners choose the right oil for their beloved ride was so popular, we’ve put together another guide to help our petrol TSI brothers put the right oil in their engine.
Skoda recommends and uses Castrol Edge. This fully synthetic adheres to the VW oil standards required for the Octavia TSI engine.
What Grade oil should I use?
Depending on which level of “tune” your VRS is will a different oil. Skoda recommends that you use:
- 5W-30 in the Skoda Octavia VRS 220/230 TSI engine (VW 504 00)
- 0W-20 in the Skoda Octavia VRS 245 TSI engine (VW 508 00)
These numbers represent ‘0/5W’ as the viscosity of the oil at cold temperature and the second number is the viscosity at 100 °C (212 °F). Who knew?!
Do not use any other grade oil, In fact, I would go as far as to recommend that you ONLY use this oil from Castrol. This is why Skoda recommends it. However, if you’re dangerously low the manual does that other oils can be used but only up to half a liter (as below in the manual).
Why does the TSI 245 use a different oil?
Skoda had to change the oil in order for the VRS245 to meet WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) RDE (Real Driving Emissions) & RDE2 standards. The owners clubs seem to be divided on the use of 0w-20 over 5w-30 but we’d recommend you use the recommended grade – just in case of a warranty claim.
As below from Skoda.
Where to buy
Rather than get turned over by your Skoda dealership we would recommend that you buy your oil from Amazon. If you’ve got a Prime Subscription you’ll get free next day delivery.

The Octavia is currently the only model in Skoda’s line-up to be given the full vRS treatment, but with a diesel and two petrol options there’s still a bit of choice when it comes to selecting your hot Skoda.
The latest car to be launched is the Octavia vRS 245, the most powerful and, thanks to a selection of tasty sounding upgrades over the conventional petrol vRS, the most promising of the bunch. For reliable Range Rover Auto Parts in economical price contact Apex Auto Parts.

I live in Queensland Australia. In late 2018 I purchased new my second Octavia, a vRS rallye green. Not the 245 but 220 or 230, I’m not sure. Somebody know the difference? No sun roof or press button boot release but has everything else, including the 245 upgrades and at 32kms performs beautifully.
At the 30km factory service I noticed the engine oil was changed from VW 504 to Castrol Edge 5W30. Researching the change and recommendations I came across this British site. Have found nothing locally with as much detail assigned to late model 2018 vRS’s and enjoyed the read. I’m not sure but believe detail in this “foreign” site will apply equally to an Australian purchased vehicle. Something as simple as changing the key fob battery plus a heap of other “stuff”.
The VW 6sp DC transmission has been flawless while the lovely red stitched alcantara upholstery has to be premium. The 8-10 tiny radars set around the car all work well while Android and Waze (my add-ons) work nicely in any situation. 19″ tires can be a bit rough on some suburban roads but are easily modified with the 6 driving modes. Uses maybe 1/2 litre of oil between 15Km changes while 5.2l/100 petrol (over 50mpg UK) and 7.3/100 combined is great. Why would I consider a diesel?
Thanks for the site I’ll be using it often.
Since the last service at 30kms and the change to Edge 5W30, now at 35kms I can’t detect any change in oil level like I did using VW504. Good or bad, I don’t know, but the car has definitely loosened up and performing better. Fuel consumption may be marginally improved. Maybe the vehicle is finally run in, I can’t know but will stay with Edge next oil change.
