Under proposals announced for consultation today by Road Safety Minister Mike Penning speeding fines could be set to increase by 50%. At present being caught by the boys (and girls)  in blue normally sees a fixed penalty of £60 and 3 points dropping through your letterbox. Under the proposals the penalty fine would increase to £90.

Its not just speeding fines that could be on the increase. Using a mobile while driving and not wearing your seat belt could also see similar increases. The consultation will also consider the introduction of further police powers which will give them the ability to issue the fixed penalty notices for “careless driving”, avoiding costing proceeding that have normally been associated with the offence.

According to Road Safety Minister, Mike Penning, “Careless driving is a major public concern and a cause of deaths and injuries on our roads. These changes support both police enforcement and, for some cases, the associated offer of educational training for motorists unaware of the full, potential consequences of driving carelessly.”

“We also need to make sure that the penalties for a wide range of fixed penalty motoring offences are set at reasonable levels, consistent with the potentially severe consequences of some infringements.”

Many motorists don’t consider or care about the increased danger to other motorists and road users together with increased fuel costs. Traveling at 80MPH rather than 60MPH can use up to 20 percent more fuel and could also see you given a hefty fine and points on your license.
