Unlike the UK, the take up of diesel cars in the US has historically been rather lethargic. Spurred on by rocketing fuel prices, US motorists are abandoning petrol cars in droves as they look for more efficient rides. Sales of the oil burners have risen by 38.5% compared to the same seven-month period in 2010.

Leading the pack of manufacturers, VW have make huge gains with diesel cars. Sales of the Jetta TDI and Golf TDI have grown by 45% and 135% compared to July of last year with the Jetta being the best selling US diesel car this year.

DieselsĀ  still represent a very small minority of total sales but with CAFE standards looming, they are set to make further gains as manufacturers clamber to make more efficient offerings.
